Good time to oppose two players who have fallen out of the top 16

RYAN DAY V JOE O'CONNOR

Head to Head 0-1
Betting Odds – Ryan Day 1.46 (5/11), Joe O'Connor 2.75 (7/4)
Monday September 23rd 08:30

Player Analysis

Eighteen months ago, Welshman Ryan Day appeared to be heading toward a world ranking position in Snooker's elite top 8. He ended the 2017/2018 season in sublime form winning both the Riga Masters and Gibraltar Open. Day's 2018/2019 season was poor in comparison and his world ranking dropped to outside the top 16 at the World Championships last April. Obviously, it is still early in the current season but there have been no encouraging signs that the slump is over.

Joe O'Connor was presented with ‘Rookie of the Year’ last season on the strength of a semi final appearance at the Welsh Open when he beat established top 16 players Kyren Wilson, Ding Junhui and John Higgins. He also managed to beat John Higgins for a second time a few weeks later at the China Championship displaying a maturity of game that looks beyond his years.

Verdict

Last seasons ‘Rookie of the Year’ Joe O'Connor did manage to beat Ryan Day at the 2018 UK Championship giving a taste of what was to follow later in that season. It is still early in the current season but both players appear on the same path and at the prices I think we have value siding with Joe O'Connor to beat Ryan Day for a second time.

Recommended Bet

Joe O'Connor to beat Ryan Day @ 2.75 (7/4) Bet365

DING JUNHUI V BRANDON SARGEANT

Head to Head 0-0
Betting Odds – Ding Junhui 1.10 (1/10), Brandon Sergeant 8.00 (7/1)
Tuesday 24th September 01:30

Player Analysis

Ding Junhui arrives at the Evergrande China Championship at possibly the lowest ebb of his glittering career. Last week at the Shanghai Masters in front of his adoring public he put in a miserable display losing to Neil Robertson. This has become a regular occurrence in the last couple of seasons, in fact during last season he never progressed further than the Quarter Final stage at any ranking tournament. That by his previous high standards was a very poor return and is the reason for him dropping out the elite top 16 to number 18 on the provisional world ranking list. In previous years, much of his best form have been reserved for the early season events in his home country, winning six of his thirteen ranking titles in China.

Ding Junhui’s opponent is the new English Amateur Champion Brandon Sergeant who is only twenty-two year’s old. In the preceding year he won his playing privileges and two-year tour card for the World Snooker circuit by ending the Challenge Tour series ranked number one. Now a professional he is on a steep learning curve but so far so good for the youngster, having acquitted himself well in his opening matches against Kyren Wilson, Stuart Carrington, Michael Holt and Ash Carty.

Verdict

Recently in the opening rounds of the two Chinese tournaments Ding Junhui has struggled to shake off Simon Lichtenberg from Germany and home nation teenager Jianbo Zhao. On all known form Sergeant is a more accomplished opponent than Lichtenberg or Zhao and if the youngster can settle into the match early, he should cover the handicap line.

Recommended Bet

Brandon Sergeant +3.5 frames @ 1.83 (5/6) Coral
