Will things start to even out in the championship standings this weekend in China or are we looking at another win for the Mercedes? Let’s look into the race weekend and see where we can find a betting edge.

Charles Leclerc had the race won in Bahrain until the turbo went on his engine and he was losing 2/3 seconds per lap on the drivers behind him. Ultimately a guaranteed 1st place ended up been a lucky 3rd place (thanks to a safety car in the last few laps where nobody is allowed overtake). Luckily for us his downfall was our fortune as we had the eventual winner bet to win and second place each way. All in all it was a successful race in terms of betting. +5.75 units to end the day.

It’s time for Pierre Gasly to make his mark with his new team Red Bull or he could be out of a job before he knows it. After two races he sits in tenth place with four points, 23 behind his teammate. Crash expert Romain Grosjean is on his last legs with team Haas also, the man rarely finishes a race. Reports are also strong that the Italian media are losing patience with four time world champions Sebastian Vettel.

The season so far has not panned out for team Ferrari, still arguable a better car than the Mercedes, or at least on par with them. They have had no luck and now they’re basically heading to Mercedes playground with the success they have achieved over the years in China. The bookies have the two Ferrari drivers top of the betting markets. The early weather forecasts indicate their might be some rain at race time.

Key Stats & facts

The Chinese Grand Prix is usually the 3rd race on the calendar each year. It’s a big track with lots of space for the drivers. It has the trickiest corner in the whole F1 calendar with a staggering 270 degree corner that tightens up at the end and requires lots of speed.

This weekend will be the 1000th Formula one race. When this track was completed in 2004 it was the most expensive F1 track at the time, costing 240 million dollars. The first F1 race was in 1950, Silverstone, England.

Ferrari has not won here since 2013 and the Red Bulls win last year broke Mercedes streak of 5 years in a row. Lewis Hamilton has the most wins here (5), largely due to Mercedes dominance throughout the last 6 years. No other driver on the current grid has more than one win on this track.

Betting Odds

*Sebastian Vettel – 7/4

*Charles Leclerc – 15/8

*Lewis Hamilton – 9/4

*Valtteri Bottas – 10/1

*Max Verstappen – 16/1

*Pierre Gasly – 80/1

*Rest of Field – 500/1+

Verdict

The value on Bottas to win this race is incredible, 1st place in Australia and 2nd in Bahrain and the bookies still doubt his chances and his ability. Currently available at 10/1 (Paddy Power) I am really liking the value angle on him right now. If he has a decent qualifying his odds will be slashed so I would advise backing him before qualifying. In this race last year he finished 2nd.

Charles Leclerc has had a very unfortunate start to the year, faster than his teammate in race one and not allowed to pass him (we think) and then getting victory snatched from his clutches in the last race. It’s hard not to fancy him to make things right now in China and also to grab a Ferrari victory here for the first time since 2013.

What can we say about Vettel, he is having a disaster of a year and going on that I am thinking he will want to be gung ho to get a victory in China, ultimately I think it will backfire and at odds of 13/2 (Betfair) for him not to be classified it’s hard not to pull the trigger on this. Obviously it’s a bit out there considering he only didn’t finish in one race in the whole of last year. I also like Daniil Kyvat not to be classified as he was well known as a big crasher last time he was in F1 (he didn’t compete last year) he has gone two races now this season without incident.

Just in case we have a crazy race and we get that rain we are expecting, you never know what happens in Formula 1 with a wet track. I am liking the value on either Renault driver to win the race at 276/1 (Betfair) Daniel Riccardo was the winner here last year (albeit in a different car) and Nicko Hulkenberg holds the record for the most F1 starts without a top 3 finish, that has to end someday, hopefully for us it’s this Sunday and he is top of the podium.

Recommended Bets

Valtteri Bottas 10/1 Betfair 1pt each way

Charles Leclerc 15/8 Paddy Power 1.5pt win

Sergio Perez to retire first 20/1 Betfair 0.5pt

Vettel not to be classified 13/2 Betfair 1pt

Daniil Kvyat not to be classified 13/5 Paddy Power 0.5pt

Renault winning team 276/1 Betfair 0.5pt

Max Verstappen fastest lap 8/1 Paddy Power 0.5pt
