The championship is certainly heading to Mercedes this year, unless something crazy happens it will be a shootout between teammates Bottas and Hamilton. Will other manufacture even win a race this year?

Preview

The Mercedes domination streak continues as they took their sixth win from six races last time in Monte Carlo. It was their eight win in a row dating back to the end of last season and it was their twelfth win from the previous 14 races. The domination is just overwhelming and it does not look like they can be stopped by Red Bull or Ferrari. It’s getting to the point that it’s almost impossible to see either of them winning a race this season, unless luck plays a part and both Mercedes drivers get hampered or both drivers don’t finish a race. Ferrari does seem to be upgrading their car and the gap between them and Mercedes will surely drop by the end of the year, Ferrari SHOULD pick up a win or two this year.

Bottas is now seventeen points behind Hamilton. It is a lot in Formula 1 when your teammate is more than likely coming 2nd if you win the race. If he wants to become world champion for the 1st time I feel this year is his best chance yet and he can’t let that slip. He needs to assert himself here in Canada and get a badly needed win.

Last race in Monte Carlo wasn’t a great spectacle of a race (It rarely is these days), still an iconic track and will continue to stay on the calendar. It would be good if they spiced it up a bit to encourage overtaking or change the style of the track a tiny bit for one or two overtaking corners. The one interesting thing that happened; it was the first time all year Mercedes didn’t finish 1st and 2nd. Instead finishing 1st and 3rd. Sebastian Vettel finished 2nd but only because Max Verstappen received a 5 second penalty for an unsafe pit release.

Key Stats & Facts

Lewis Hamilton has won 6 of the last 11 races at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

There has been on average 4.1 DNFs over the previous five races.

Michael Schumacher has the most wins on this track with 7 victories, on today’s current grid the driver who has the most wins is Lewis Hamilton with 6.

The final corner on the track is known as “The wall of champions” because many F1 world champions has become victim to the wall and have crashed into it.

The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is another iconic Formula 1 track. It has been on the F1 calendar for 55 years from a possible 58. The only occasions it wasn’t held here is 1975, 1987 and 2009.

Betting Odds

*Lewis Hamilton – 5/4

*Valtteri Bottas – 5/2

*Sebastian Vettel – 4/1

*Charles Leclerc – 5/1

*Max Verstappen- 25/1

*Pierre Gasly – 200/1

*Rest of Field – 750/1+

Verdict

I think Bottas has a slight edge over Hamilton when it comes to this track, although Hamilton has a very impressive record here. If we look back to last year’s race, Hamilton was much better than Bottas all season long but Bottas managed to beat him on this track by 14 seconds and finished in 2nd place. Hamilton won the last two races with Bottas coming in second; I think the pendulum swings back in the Finnish drivers favour this time out in Canada. He is best priced at 5/2 on Bet365 and this price could drift in if he qualifies on pole. I would advise betting him at 5/2 and also bet Bottas to finish on pole at 9/4 with William Hill. He has started on pole 3 of 6 races this season.

I won’t be making this an official pick but I’m just throwing this out there as I can see some value in Red Bull driver Pierre Gasly to finish in the top 6 at odds of 10/11 with Betfair. My only real concern is that he might crash, but other than that I believe he is faster than the Renaults and Haas drivers and should pick up at least sixth position.

I liked the look of Verstappen for the fastest lap but unfortunately and surprisingly he is coming in at around 7/2 best price with most bookies, some only offering 3/1. I can’t take a gamble on this at these low odds even though I did like this bet, maybe you might get a better price on race day. Instead I am taking the value on Hamilton at odds of 9/2 only available at William Hill, so I would get on that bet right now before they lower the price, most bookies offering 7/2.

It’s always an exciting race at this track in Canada, with lots of overtaking and usually two or three driver retirements along the way. It has the potential to be one of the races of the year.

Recommended Bets

Valtteri Bottas race winner 5/2 (Bet365) 1 unit each way

Valtteri Bottas to start on pole 9/4 (William Hill) 0.5 unit

Lewis Hamilton fastest lap 9/2 (William Hill) 1 unit

Recommended Fun Bets For Interest

Max Verstappen race winner 25/1 (William Hill) 0.5 units each way

Renault both cars to be classified NO 6/5 (Bet365) 1 unit

Toro Rosso first car retirement 15/2 (Bet365) 0.5 unit
