The Italian jockey’s fantastic run of fortune looks like coming to an end with King George and Goodwood rides in major doubt

Ante-post gamblers are sweating in the sizzling British summer heatwave for another reason: the ten-day band handed to jockey Frankie Dettori for careless riding which puts his participation in two huge summer meetings in doubt.

Dettori, the punters’ pal in the showpiece races because he almost always brings his a-game, was sanctioned in the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes at Newmarket on Friday. The Italian, who has been in sensational Grade One form, was adjudged to have caused interference to Main Edition and La Pelosa when aboard Angel’s Hideaway.

The ban would mean Dettori misses out on the King George at Ascot, which is on July 28 one day after it begins. It would also mean he misses the entire Glorious Goodwood Festival, which finishes the day before the sanction is lifted.

The 47-year-old won the King George last year aboard Enable and was expected to pick between Cracksman and Coronet if the ground suited. Cracksman is as short as 11/2 for the King George and it would take a brave man to take those odds with Dettori absent.

The same could be said about Coronet at 8/1 (Bet365, Ladbrokes, William Hill). With Dettori’s Ascot magic missing, he landed his sixth Gold Cup at the course earlier this year, money will swell for the jolly, Crystal Ocean.

The Sir Michael Stoute-trained charge is no better than 6/4 with Bet365 and William Hill and the wily Stoute is convinced he is ready to take a step up in class following a hugely impressive win in the Hardwicke Stakes.

Crystal Ocean is, according to Stoute, “uncomplicated and relaxed” and both qualities would be required for the horse’s backers at the odds.

At Goodwood, Dettori was set to ride Royal Ascot winners Stradivarius in the Goodwood Cup and Without Parole in the Sussex Stakes.

It doesn’t take much for punters to get against a favourite, particularly one which is odds-on so Stradivarius without the favoured jock is not a fancy. Stradivarius is 4/5 with Betfair. Money has instead come for Torcedor, now no better than 5/1 (Ladbrokes).

Without Parole is also surely to be swerved at 13/8 favourite (Betfair) with 6/4 available pretty much across the board. That means we lean heavily to the impressive Gustav Klimt at a tasty-looking 6/1 with Ladbrokes.

Dettori was “devasted” when told about the ban and he has already launched an appeal. Certainly the carpeting looked harsh considering placings were not affected. Still, it would be a major surprise if part of the ban was upheld and at the least he looks guaranteed to miss the King George and Goodwood Cup.
