What are the hot tips and best bets as the tournament begins in the UAE?

Round one matches

Friday 3 October 2019, Dubai and Abu Dhabi

The race is on to join the big boys for the World T20 next year as the so-called in-ternational ‘minnows’ line up on the starting block. The bookies would have you believe there are five teams who are faster and stronger than the rest.

Scotland, who were desperately unlucky not to have made this year’s ODI World Cup in England, are the joint-favourites to win the competition with their cousins from Ireland. Both outfits are rated at 4.0 (3/1) by Unibet and Betway. Next best are the Netherlands at 5.0 (4/1) and those with long memories will recall they have garnered experience for players in domestic cricket in England. Oman and the United Arab Emirates are next at 6.0 (5/1_ and 6.5 (11/2) respectively. Then it’s just a bun fight with big numbers following the likes of Namibia, Canada, Jer-sey, Papua New Guinea, Nigeria. Etcetera. Everyone else is making up the num-bers.

No doubt there will be some nervousness among punters about wagering in a competition where there is limited data available on the individuals. But it’s the same for the bookies and if you do your research you can unpick the value.

The first game of the tournament sees the Scots take on Singapore and Bet365 have made a rick by not picking up the true chances of Richie Berrington scoring most runs. Berrington is the Scots’s Mr Reliable with a record of five wins in his last 19 outings. He also has two shared honours in that time. That’s a 26 per cent win rate for Berrington on the market. Bet365 give Berrington an implied proba-bility of 16.7 per cent – massive edge in our favour. In others words, they go 6.0 (5/1) when he should be significantly shorter.

There’s also a spot of value in the Oman versus UAE clash. The UAE have lost two players – including their skipper – because of corruption allegations and they are unavailable. They are unlikely to be a motivated camp as a result. Unibet are go-ing 1.8 (4/5) about Oman taking the spoils and they should probably be slightly skinnier.

Best Bet: Back Richie Berrington top Scotland runscorer 6.0 at Bet365
