Spinner has the hit rate to land top series wicket-taker wager against vulnerable Aussies

India suffered a stunning reverse at home to Australia in the Twenty20 series. They were beaten 2-0 at home – a result which didn’t just turn the form guide upside down but churn it round and round in an industrial-size washing machine.

It was only their third series defeat on their own soil in seven years against a team they routinely dominate in their own conditions. Bettors never like the status quo to be upset so what to make of the five one-day internationals which follow, starting on Sunday?

Well, India are a superior ODI team. And they have historically enjoyed playing Australia more in the format. It’s only two series defeats at home since December 2009 and they have a head-to-head record against the Aussies in India during that period of played 12, won eight.

Indeed, they hammered Australia 4-1 in September 2017. A repeat of that scoreline is 6/4 with Bet365 with 3-2 likely to attract most attention at 2/1. A home whitewash is just 11/2. To play it straight, you need big pockets. India are no better than 1/5 with the Aussies 7/2.

If you fancy Australia’s mini-resurgence to continue, it might be smarter to take the 9/2 the firm offer about a 3-2 correct score for the visitors. Given the ratio on the head-to-head it would be quite extraordinary if India failed to win more than just one match.

The T20 series does inform us for the top Australia series runscorer market, again with Bet365. Glenn Maxwell found form impressively and his century in game two will be marked down as epic given the pressure Australia were under. The 11/2 looks very tasty indeed, particularly as he appears to have little to beat with his compatriots struggling for fluency.

Our second wager comes on the top India bowler market and it’s our best bet. Kuldeep Yadav is 7/4 (Bet365) to take more wickets than his team-mates. We were hugely disappointed not to get the chance to bet him in the T20s because he is so consistent. Instead, India rested him to get ready for this contest.

Kuldeep is a master of spin wizardry. In the last two years he wins individual innings honours 35 per cent of the time so there’s an edge in our favour over five matches. Rivals like Mohammad Shami, a wily pacer, can only dream of such a hit rate. As far as we can make out, it is one of the greatest in the world, trumped only by Matt Henry of New Zealand who is in the 40 per cent bracket.

Best of all, Australia have a weakness against tweak which goes back generations. Not that we need to go back that far. In that 2017 series Kuldeep topped India’s charts with seven victims.
