Ex snooker professional Craig Edwards previews three opening round matches in the Indian Open and provides us with tips on each.

World Snooker continues a busy 2018/2019 season with a trip for the last 64 qualified players and local wild cards to Kochi in India. This event is now becoming well established on the snooker calendar visiting the country for the fifth time in the last seven years.

Fergal O'Brien v Oliver Lines, 27/02/2019, 13:30

Head to Head 0-1

Only a fortnight ago these two players opposed each other in the opening round at the Welsh Open where Oliver Lines won impressively 4-2 with two century breaks. The son of veteran Leeds professional Peter Lines lost next round in unlucky fashion to the Chinese superstar Ding Junhui potting the match winning black only for the cue ball go in off. Last week he completed an impressive qualifying win over Tom Ford in the China Open and won a couple of matches at the Shoot-out. Fergal O’Brien is a tough match player and often underestimated however, his season has lost momentum losing ten of his last twelve matches. I was surprised to see the bookmakers make the Irishman favourite for this match and happy to have a small bet on Oliver Lines keep his good run going.

Betting Odds

Fergal O'Brien @4/5 (1.80) Bet365

Oliver Lines @1/1 (2.00) Bet365

Recommended Bet: Oliver Lines to beat Fergal O'Brien @1/1 (2.00) Bet365

Jimmy Robertson v Scott Donaldson, 28/02/2019, 06:30

Head to Head 0-3

Both players travel to India enjoying excellent seasons with Jimmy Robertson winning his first ranking title the European Masters for £75,000 moving himself up to 22nd on the provisional world ranking. Scott Donaldson has been consistent rather than spectacular with a semi final at the Paul Hunter Classic and quarter final in the Welsh Open. This looks a very interesting match to preview because at www.edwards-tips.co.uk all the data from the last three seasons show both players have a very high percentage of seven frame matches going over 5.5 frames in fact our price is 1.58. Our 50+ break data shows both players playing to a similar standard all year despite the gap in their world rankings and with the dominant head to head in favour of Scott Donaldson we advise a small win bet on the Scot plus a bet on a deciding frame in the match.

Betting Odds

Jimmy Robertson @4/5 (1.80) Bet36

Scott Donaldson @1/1 (2.00) Bet365

Recommended Bets: Scott Donaldson to beat Jimmy Robertson @1/1 (2.00) bet365, match to go to a deciding frame @12/5 (3.40) William Hill

Graeme Dott v Alexander Ursenbacher , 28/02/2019 , 06:30

Head to Head 1-0

The Scot Graeme Dott 2006 world champion has looked badly out of form these last couple of months after a bright start to the season where he reached the Riga Masters quarter final only managing one round of 32 in his last ten starts. Alexander Ursenbacher sprung to prominence at last season’s English Open where he reached the semi-finals. What followed unexpectedly, was seven successive first round defeats and this season has been one of consolidation to restore the lost confidence which he would appear to have done with a TV victory over Ronnie O'Sullivan in the Welsh Open followed last week by qualifying for the China Open. As the long snooker season draws on confidence becomes more important by the day and here we have players currently at opposite ends of that spectrum. At the prices the young Swiss player Alexander Ursenbacher represents our best bet.

Betting Odds

Graeme Dott @1/2 (1.50) Bet365

Alexander Ursenbacher @13/8 (2.62) Bet365

Recommended bet: Alexander Ursenbacher to beat Graeme Dott
