Ed Hawkins (@cricketbetting) analyses what has gone wrong for the Bangalore franchise in the IPL 2019 title race

Rajasthan Royals v Royal Challengers Bangalore

Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Tuesday 2 April, 15.30

Match Odds: Rajasthan Royals vs Royal Challengers Bangalore

There may be some raised eyebrows that Royal Challengers Bangalore have lost three out of three in IPL 2019. In two of them, they have been annihilated. How can a roster which boasts Virat Kohli, the best batsman in the world, AB De Villiers, who arguably he took the crown from, England hitter Moeen Ali and one of India’s best limited-over spinners in Yuz Chahal, be so dreadful?

The answer is simple. Royal Challengers Bangalore don’t think. They don’t prepare. They don’t plan. They turn up and expect to win because of the names listed above. And when they don’t, they find other things to blame: like the irrelevant no-ball of the final delivery in their loss against Mumbai Indians.

It has always been this way with Bangalore down the years. Their complacency has been exposed in every auction there has ever been. They have obsessed over batting talent, consistently failing to realise, despite the evidence stacked high from every franchise league in the world, that it is bowlers who win the day. It shows an alarming lack of brainpower.

And yet, and yet, they are odds-on to beat Rajasthan Royals today. This despite the fact that the status quo remains steadfast with RCB like no other team. They are incredibly reliable – this year now threatens to be their seventh year (and third in a row) that they are not involved in the play-offs.
Not surprisingly, we reckon you would need a treat to the doctor if you thought they were worth betting against the Royals. The fast route to a Mediterranean yacht since the IPL’s inaugural year has been laying the stink out of them when they go sub even money.

It is true that the Royals have also lost three on the spin but they have at least shown a modicum of gumption. This is a choice affair all over and on that basis it is child’s play to recognise RR as the value – they are 11/10 (2.1) with Bet365

We expect Jos Buttler to lead the charge. Buttler is overdue a score and he should have recognised the need to be a little cannier at the start of an innings now teams have attacked him with spin. RCB may, or may not, have been paying attention. Buttler is available at 13/5 (3.6) with Bet365 for top Royals bat.

Best tip for the match: Jos Buttler top RR bat 13/5 (Bet365)
