Look for pace bowlers who can benefit from bowling at the end of an innings when wickets go on the cheap

In the frenetic, glitzy world of the Indian Premier League odds race, the bowlers are the workhorses. Rarely do they have their name in lights, they put in the hard yards so the batter - the men everyone comes to see - can take the plaudits. But make no mistake a good bowling unit is worth twice a good batting unit. No franchise in any T20 tournament around the world has won a title with solely the latter.

Breaking it down to individuals who can shine is tricky if you fail to recognise that multi-dimensional bowlers are the ones who rise to the top. Look at the top wicket-taker in IPL history as an example. Lasith Malinga, of Mumbai Indians, has an unconventional style, can bowl at the start, the middle and the death of an innings. And he has plenty of variations, like an expert slower ball.

A must for a wager is a bowler who bowls at the end of an innings when wickets are cheap. Batters are throwing caution to the wind and it is not unusual for a decent death bowler to take two down in a two-over spell. So, who fits the bill?

Jasprit Bumrah

Mumbai Indians

India’s Jasprit Bumrah is widely regarded as the best death bowler in the world. Guess who he learned from? That’s right, Malinga. Bumrah has a similar slingy action and is superb at hitting the blockhole. It’s as if he’s his team-mate’s protege. Last year he finished seventh on the wickets list and it is reasonable to expect that he will break into the each-way places in IPL 2019 because Mumbai should have a better campaign.

AJ Tye

Kings Xi Punjab

The holder. Tye finished top spot last year with 24 wickets in 14 matches. That was three more than Rashid Khan, the Sunrises Hyderabad magician, who played in three more matches. What could Tye haul in if Kings actually make the play-offs this time? Tye is surprisingly unheralded despite being deadly accurate and possessing enough variations to bamboozle batsmen. He should be one of the first names on the team sheet for the Australia limited-overs teams but he isn’t.

Jofra Archer

Rajasthan Royals

Jofra Archer has been fastracked through the overseas qualification period in case England want to pick him for the World Cup. He’s an out-and-out wicket-taker. But he’s expensive, which means he can be underrated by some. He will go round the park but he will take batters down. Last year he had a strike rate of a wicket every 15.5 balls. In the top 20 wicket-takers last year, only AJ Tye bettered that hit rate. Archer took 15 in ten. If he manages a whole campaign he’s in the mix.

Read More: Full IPL 2019 Betting Guide

Related Articles

IPL Top Batsman Guide: Kohli Favourite to be Top Dog

Indian Premier League Betting odds
