Due to the Champion of Champions format he had to play two matches in Tuesday beating Indian Open champion Matt Selt 4-2 in the round of 16. He looked to be timing the ball very well but his concentration was drifting especially against Matt Selt. Allen has grown an affinity for the Champion of Champions in recent years losing a close semi-final in 2018 to Kyren Wilson 5-6 after being the runner up in 2015 to Neil Robertson. This season so far Allen has been accumulating plenty of match wins but just falling short of winning the tournaments as three semi-final finishes illustrate. He lost two semi-finals in the Asian swing at the Shanghai Masters and International Championship to his good friend Shaun Murphy and the other to Mark Selby at the English Open. Twelve months ago he was in superlative form winning the International Championship and Scottish Open with a final appearance at the UK Championship sandwiched between. This is the time of year Allen seems to excel and with his solid recent form a tournament win looks likely sooner rather than later.

Judd Trump, like Mark Allen will be relieved to have a couple of days off as he needs to recharge his batteries. He dashed up to Coventry after only managing four hours at home following a long travel back from China. His opening match was against an injured Stephen Maguire and he followed up by beating Thepchayia un-Nooh for the second time in four days at venues over 6000 miles apart. Last week's win at the Yushan World Open continued his superb 2019 however, it was not vintage Trump but he showed the commitment that has made him world number one and World Champion in the last six months. He won the 2019/2020 season opener International Championship and has actually accumulated a phenomenal six titles in the last calendar year. The Champion of Champions is one tournament that has eluded the ‘Juggernaut’ and being runner up to Ronnie O'Sullivan was his best performance, and the only other time he reached the semi-final stage.

A superb match in prospect on Saturday night at the Ricoh Arena when Snooker's best two left-handers cross swords. They have met once in the current season at the other high profile invitation tournament, the Shanghai Masters when Mark Allen was the comfortable victor by a 6-1 score. That may seem like a shock to many but the Northern Irishman has a superb career record and a affinity for playing well against the World Champion. Trump will have one eye on the UK Championship at the end of November and given his previous record and potential fatigue is opposable at the prices to a player who uniquely appears to save his best performances for their encounters.

In five best of 11 frame matches these two players have gone ten frames or more on four occasions and it would be rude to not bet the trend continuing on Saturday night.

Recommended Bets

Mark Allen to beat Judd Trump @ 2.62 (13/8) Bet365

Over 9.25 Asian frames @ 1.82 (5/6) Bet365
