The Golden States Warriors are clear favourites to win the NBA Championship again this season, but is it worth backing them at short odds or can anyone stop them?

The Golden State Warriors are the heavy favourites to win the NBA Championship for the third time in a row this season. They have been untouchable since bringing in the magnificent Kevin Durant to play alongside Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and Andre Iguodala in the famous Death Lineup. They added another All-Star, De Marcus Cousins, to this outrageously stacked roster in the summer and they now have a dominant centre too. Can anyone stop them winning the NBA Championship for a fourth time in five years?

Can anyone in the west usurp the Dubs?

The Warriors have won the Western Conference for the last four seasons in a row, so it is easy to see why they are just 3/10 (1.33) with Betfair, Paddy Power, Boyle Sports and 888 Sport to do so again this season. They have the best record in the west and they sit comfortably top of the table, despite playing in second gear for most of the season thus far. They often drop games throughout the regular season as a result of boredom and a lack of motivation, but they always come good in the playoffs.

Last season the Houston Rockets finished top of the standings and many thought they could finally vanquish Golden State after bringing in Chris Paul to play alongside James Harden in a supremely dominant backcourt. They came close to taking down the Dubs in the conference championship series, but ultimately an injury to Paul cost them as Golden State scraped a 4-3 victory. This time around the Rockets look less impressive. They are 5-5 in their last 10 games and 33-25 for the season, with a .569 win percentage that compares unfavourably to the .793 they achieved last year.

Reigning regular season MVP Harden has been sensational once again, and he is the favourite to be named MVP once more, but the supporting cast has disappointed. Elsewhere, OKC have not delivered on the promise their stellar line-up offers, while the Lakers are having a poor season despite signing the legendary LeBron James, so it is hard to see anyone stopping Golden State from conquering the west once again.

Can the Eastern Conference’s leading lights vanquish them?

The Warriors are best priced at 10/21 (1.48) with Bet365 to go on and win the NBA Championship this year. You would need to lay down a large bundle of cash to make a punt on them worthwhile, but if you feel like they are dead certs to win it, then it could be a great investment. It is interesting to note that the next four teams in the NBA Championship betting odds are all in the Eastern Conference. The bookmakers expect the Dubs to canter to victory in the west, and then it would be up to the east’s top team to try to usurp them. If the Warriors suffer a couple of key injuries, it just might be possible.

The Cleveland Cavaliers won the Eastern Conference for the last four seasons, but their fall from grace since James left has been spectacular. There is a power vacuum in the east and the Toronto Raptors, Milwaukee Bucks, Philadelphia 76ers and Boston Celtics are all vying for glory. You can get strong odds on any of those teams winning the NBA Championship: Bet365 has 9/1 on the Raps, 10/1 on the Bucks, 13/1 on the 76ers and 14/1 on the Celtics. They are all good teams, but none of them boast the depth of talent that the Dubs can call upon.

The Warriors have 16-5 against the Eastern Conference this season, compared to 26-11 against their own conference, so they would be confident in their chances of winning the NBA Finals once more. Unless Curry and/or Durant suffer bad injuries, it is hard to see anyone from the east beating this phenomenally talented Golden State team over a best-of-seven series. You might be better off simply betting on who will win the Eastern Conference – and we have provided a rundown of it here – rather than backing any of those teams to go on and win the NBA Championship.

Then you simply have to decide whether or not to go lump on another Golden State triumph. There is always a risk that they will be struck down by injuries, but they are blessed with a phenomenal array of talent anyway. Green, Thompson and Cousins are all All-Stars, and this is a team that could still succeed in spite of a couple of big injuries, so it certainly seems like a tempting option to back them to soar to glory once again this season.
