Craig Edwards previews the Northern Trust side markets. Precision approach play is the key this week

Northern Trust

July 8-11
Liberty National Golf Club
Betting Predictions and Tips

This week's Northern Trust brings together the top 125 on the PGA Tour list and with next week’s BMW Championship limited to the top 70 there is much to play for.

The player I want to mention first is Webb Simpson who has become something of a specialist in holding his consistency throughout his PGA Tour campaign and particularly through the FedEx play off series. Twice this event has been held at Liberty National Golf Club and both times he has produced his customary top 20 finish. He seems to revel in the demands of the series and many of the courses suit his eye.

As I have discussed before in this column when I analyse which players to bet in the place markets, I look to players who are not necessarily comfortable in contention and winning a tournament. One such player that springs to mind is the ultra-consistent Jason Kokrak who is yet to win on the PGA Tour despite accumulating just under $10,000,000 in prize money. He finished in the top 10 of this event at the course in 2013 and has eight top 20 finishes on Tour this season. Last week at the Wyndham Championship he finished 6th and looks a solid selection in the place markets this week.

Another similar player to consider is Nick Watney whose last victory on the PGA Tour was the 2012 Barclays which was the former name of this week's event. He appears to have a real affinity for the event and also, he has two 6th place finishes in 2009 and 2013 at this course. Only two top 10 finishes on the PGA Tour this year he will be keen to bank a good cheque to move him into the top 70 and make the cut to qualify for next week's BMW Championship. He looks a solid bet in the Top 20 market.

Another similar player and a choice of mine that regular readers of my column will not be surprised by is Jim Furyk. The forty-nine-year old has forced his way back into the World’s Top 50 with a string of high-level performances with the highlight being a 2nd place finish at the Players Championship. He will be a major force on the Champions Tour when he reaches the magic age of fifty, but we can still exploit some profits from his legendary consistency in the place markets until May 2020.

Rory Sabbatini recently changed his citizenship from South African to Slovakian in an attempt to compete in the next Olympic Games. Six times a winner on tour, his last win was in the 2011 Honda Classic. Now in his forties, tournament victories are thin on the ground, but he has been superbly consistent all season long on the PGA Tour with seven top 20 finishes in his last twelve events. Combine that with his top 20 finish in 2013 at Liberty National Golf Club and we have a rock-solid Top 20 bet this week.

Many players will be making their debut this week at Liberty National and in this event. One such player I like is Canadian Corey Conners who is high up the list on the stat for strokes gained tee to green. This precision has always been the main strength of his play and these last two weeks he appears close to the form which won the Valero Texas Open earlier in the season. He looks worth supporting in the Top Rest of the World market and top 20 finish this week.

Recommended Bets - All Odds with Paddy Power

Jason Kokrak – Top 40 @ 2.37 (11/8)

Nick Watney – Top 20 @ 7.50 (13/2)

Webb Simpson - Top 20 @ 2.30 (13/10)

Corey Conners – Top Rest of the World - each way @ 34.00 (34/1)

Jim Furyk – Top American - each way @ 81.00 (80/1)
