What are the hot tips and best match bets for the first quarter-final in the T20 tournament?

Nottinghamshire Outlaws vs Middlesex

Thursday 5 September 2019 at Trent Bridge

Nottinghamshire, who finished second behind Lancashire in their section, get the chance to book a Finals Day spot with defeat of a Middlesex unit who, for a time, looked like failing to live up to the hype.

Middlesex needed a victory over Somerset at Taunton to make it to a rare knock-out appearance. They got it thanks to some scintillating hitting from Eoin Morgan England’s World Cup-winning captain. But the Taunton wicket was flat and the Somerset bowling some of the worst ever seen at this level. Don’t be fooled by Middlesex’s mammoth chase.

We have been impressed by the Outlaws this season, chiefly because they had better and more efficient plans in the field. In the past they have looked profligate and prone to conceding big totals. But they’ve been noticeably tighter this time.

No teams has conceded fewer runs that Notts in the North Group and although their batting has not been as destructive, we’re always far happier to see a team more proficient with the former rather than the latter.

This will be extremely important when they come up against a Middlesex team whose strength is with the blade. That international-studded batting line-up of theirs – Paul Stirling, Dawid Malan, AB De Villiers and Morgan – means you have to be on the money from ball one.

Given that Notts have show qualities in all facets – and they finished higher up in their group – we are surprised that they are not clear favourites. Betfair and Paddy Power make them the outsiders at 2.1 (11/10) while up to five firms were struggling to split the pair. With home advantage, we expect a strong Outlaws show.

One boost for Middlesex is that spinner Mujeeb ur Rahman is available with Mohammad Hafeez, the Pakistan international, heading off to the Caribbean Premier League.

For the record, De Villiers is 3.0 (2/1) with Willaim Hill for top Middlesex bat. That’s not a great price cosndieirng he should be batting no lower than No 3. Morgan is 5.0 (4/1) with Betfair, BetVictor and Paddy Power.

Best Bets: Back Nottinghamshire 2.1with Betfair
