Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course

Oct 24-27, Vilamoura

South African George Coetzee has an impressive bank of form at Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course with three top 7 finishes and last season he also managed a top 20 finish. As the years have passed Coetzee has become less of a threat to winning tournaments but is still a player capable of high finishes. In the current season, he had accumulated five top 20 finishes with a runner up finish in the Qatar Masters before last week's Open de France, where he found himself with the lead during the final round only to fall away on the back nine. With all of his career victories coming on his own continent it will be best to concentrate on the side markets for the big South African.

I have had another South African Justin Walters earmarked to play well here for the past couple of weeks. The South African had to take a break from the European Tour a couple of months ago when sadly his father passed away. On his return, he produced a round of 63 at St Andrews in the Dunhill Links Championship when partnering the great Australian spin bowler, Shane Warne in the pro-am. That was his first good round since losing his father and he backed that up with a top 10 finish at the Italian Open. This week at the Portugal Masters will bring back good memories for the South African whose best previous European Tour performance was runner up here in 2013. That year there was a similar sad dynamic affecting Walters after the passing of his mother and pressure to keep his playing privileges. Over the years there have been numerous examples of professional sportsman able to draw inspiration from sad circumstances like these and play without fear. Currently near the cut line in the ‘Race to Dubai' at 121st, I hope that will be the case for Walters this week in Portugal in what would be an emotional triumph at Vilamoura if he won. For betting purposes we are going to take simpler route of the top 20 market for this week's banker bet. Also adding a small each-way bet on Top Rest of the World market.

At last years Portugal Masters, Oliver Fisher broke the course record in round two with the hallowed golf score of 59. The Englishman went on to complete a second top 10 finish in two years at Vilamoura. Often in recent seasons, he has dealt with the pressure of retaining his playing privileges and this one is no different from his current position of 113th in the ‘Race to Dubai'. A fifth-place finish at the Maybank Championship in March is the highlightof his current campaign that has tailed off since. Noticeably he made the cut at last week's Open de France giving him something to build on this week as the year reaches its climax.

Former Ryder Cup star, Jamie Donaldson has had a renaissance in form with a couple of top 10 finishes amongst several prominent efforts. Last week he started the final round in Paris a couple of shots off the lead but a poor final round saw him drop down the final leaderboard. At forty-four years old his winning days may be behind him but he is still a solid bet in this week's place markets at a venue he has had four top 10 finishes at.

As the saying goes “If its not broke don't fix it” applies to our winning bet last week on Stephen Gallacher in the top 40 markets. Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course is one of his favourite courses that has allowed him three top 10 finishes in the last decade. Coming here off back to back top 40 finishes it is a simple angle to support him in this week.

Home nation, representative Pedro Figueiredo, is an interesting outsider this week at Vilamoura. He knows the course very well with three top 30 placings when a being a category 8 national spot exemption player in past years. This year has been his first on the European Tour with full playing privileges and it has been difficult for the Portuguese golfer however, there has been promise especially in recent weeks. Three top 40 finishes combined with impressive stats that suggest his results could have been better make him a small play in the side markets this week.

Another home player Ricardo Gouveia has seriously impressive form at Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course despite struggling to cement his place on the main tour. The last two seasons have resulted in top 10 finishes after five previous solid efforts. Like Figueiredo he has often needed the same category 8 exemption and now has the opportunity to put that experience to good use again this year.

Germany's Bernd Ritthammer made a breakthrough on the European Tour in the recent Porsche European Open with a runner up finish in his home country. This powerful hitter looks well suited to Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course generous fairways and has a previous top 10 finish in 2015. He makes appeal this week in the Bet365 Top Continental European market each way at 76.00.

The top 40 market is carried by Paddy Power, Betfair and Boylesports. If your unable to use it then half stakes on the selections in the top 20 market.

Recommended Bets

Justin Walters – Top 20 @ 5.50 (9/2) Paddy Power

Justin Walters – Top Rest of the World - each-way @ 21.00 Bet365

Stephen Gallacher – Top 40 @ 2.25 (5/4) Boylesports

Pedro Figueiredo - Top 40 @ 5.00 (4/1) Paddy Power

Ricardo Gouveia – Top 20 @ 6.00 (5/1) Paddy Power

Bernd Ritthammer – each-way - Top Continental European @ 76.00 (75/1) Bet365
