Mark Allen v Louis Heathcote

December 11th, 15:00 at Emirates Arena, Glasgow

Betting Odds: Mark Allen 1.10 (1/10), Louis Heathcote 7.00 (6/1)
Head to Head: Mark Allen 1-0 Louis Heathcote

Mark Allen arrives in Scotland as the defending champion having beat good friend Shaun Murphy in last year's final. Already this season, the Northern Irishman has been supremely consistent, reaching four semi-finals despite not yet reaching the heights of his 2018/2019 season when he won two ranking titles plus a final at the UK Championship. His season has yet to catch fire but Glasgow could be the place for Allen to break his recent semi-final hoodoo. He is a proven winner, with his triumph at the 2018 Masters his greatest triumph. He did start slowly in his opening round against veteran Andy Hicks falling 0-2 behind before finding his form in the ‘nick of time' to reel off four frames in succession. There are legitimate reasons for his slow start against Hicks having lost his UK Championship semi-final less than 48 hours earlier to Stephen Maguire 6-0. The UK Championship is a marathon over almost two weeks and with Allen being a major competitor in the big events he would have had to deal with the disappointment of losing at such a late stage.

Louis Heathcote has had an interesting last six months of 2019 after a remarkable comeback at the summer qualifying school saw him gain his professional playing privileges at the tender age of twenty-two. In his final match at the Qualifying School 2 he faced the Chinese sensation Si Jiahui who had beaten Heathcote 4-0 in Qualifying School 1. Jiahui raced into a 3-0 lead and in frame four Heathcote needed snookers to keep his dream alive. Showing great resilience Heathcote got the snookers and embarked on a remarkable comeback to pip Jiahui 4-3. Louis Heathcote is from Leicester, which has been a hotbed of snooker spanning many years with players such as Willie Thorne and Mark Selby to name a couple. He has acquitted himself well to the professional game beating respected players such as Ryan Day, Noppon Saengkham, Hossein Vafaei and this week Anthony Hamilton. Many of those wins have been close encounters and he has already shown he has the bottle for professional snooker and possibly a contender with Si Jiahui for ‘Rookie of the Year’ if he can find a deep run or two in the forthcoming tournaments.

An interesting matchup at the Scottish Open to preview between one of this season's most consistent high-level professionals and an exciting rookie. Mark Allen could be forgiven his slow start in the opening round against Andy Hicks but his professionalism meant he prevailed. Louis Heathcote managing to beat Nottingham's Anthony Hamilton was another small step in his burgeoning young career. Every time there has been a question asked of Heathcote's ability this season, he has responded and this is the second time in a few months that he has been drawn against Allen having lost in the round of 32 at the English Open 4-1. This time around I am expecting Heathcote to push Allen closer for a number of reasons. It is plausible that Allen is fatigued from a successful few months on tour that has taken a little sharpness out of his game. Before his semi-final loss last week to Stephen Maguire he has had to negotiate several tough matches beating Nigel Bond, Jak Jones and Kurt Maflin, all in deciding frames 6-5. The reverse applies to Heathcote who will be sharp and the experience of playing Allen a few weeks ago can only help him settle better this time around.

The main bet is over the 5.25 Asian frames at Bet365 with a small speculative bet on Heathcote +1.5 frames given Mark Allen's current propensity to start matches slowly while still managing to win matches via a deciding frame.

Recommended Bets

Over 5.25 Asian Frames @ 1.85 (17/20) Bet365

Louis Heathcote +1.5 frames @ 3.75 (11/4) Bet365
