What are the hot tips and best match bets for the South Group contest in the T20 tournament?

Sussex vs Essex

Thursday 21 August 2019 at Hove

The Blast is back after a one-week hiatus and it’s as if it has never been away. Sussex, still everyone’s favourites for the titl, head the betting for glory. Just as they did before a ball was bowled.

But it would be wrong to reckon all was well on the south coast. It’s not. Sussex have suffered a player drain which could undermine confidence ahead of the in-evitable knockouts, considering their record of six wins out of eight completed matches. It’s probably time to double up on Lancashire, our outright tip.

Jofra Archer, in case you’ve been living under a rock, is England’s new go-to bowling super-star. Rashid Khan, the go-to spinner superstar in domestic tournaments, has returned to Af-ghanistan. And Tymal Mills, once the man touted as England’s go-to bowling superstar, is out of the tournament with a back injury.

A bit of luck, then, that Essex arrive with two wins in six attempts. And, more importantly, the after-effects of an outrageous comeback in the County Championship against Kent. Essex are top of the pile and anyone who thinks they are in the least bothered about this hit and gig-gle given their penchant for a pennant is living under that rock we mentioned.

The layers have no truck with Essex here. William Hill and Bet Victor go 1.67 (4/6) Sussex. Essex are as big as 2.35 (27/20) with Unibet. Given the differing form and priorities, we could make a case for a hefty bet on the hosts.

But that’s never been our bag. A peruse of the odds tells you Sussex are strong and we expect better analysis than that. Luke Wright is a top-bat bet. We have him winning on career form 25 per cent of the time. Last year he managed a 37 per cent hit rate and the year before that 36. At 4.5 (7/2) Ladbrokes and Betfair make him a 22 per cent chance. That’s a clear edge in our favour. Phil Salt, his opening partner, is a danger but the 4.5 doesn’t tempt as much.

Best Bets

Back Luke Wright top Sussex bat 4.5 Betfair
