Pakistan’s run of form is extraordinary, but the bookmakers refuse to respect them.

On Sunday Pakistan defeated Australia in Harare in a T20 tri-series final (the other team was a hopeless Zimbabwe). It would be easy to dismiss the result as irrelevant. After all, so much T20 cricket is played these days, it is hard to keep up.

But it was significant. Pakistan thumped Australia. They chased down a very tough 184 with four balls and six wickets to spare. Frankly, the result was not in doubt. And why should it have been? Pakistan are the best T20 team in the world. It was their 22nd win in their last 26 matches spread over two years. That is a phenomenal record.

No doubt you didn’t know Pakistan were the No-1 rated team in the world. And no doubt you had no clue they were on such a hot streak. But that is because they are the ultimate unfashionable team. Their best players are rarely fantasised about by overseas franchises and they sure as hell are not allowed to play in the biggest meat market of them all, the Indian Premier League.

It may be shrewd to start paying attention to Pakistan. The next World Twenty20 is in 2020. That’s a long old poke away but hang on a second, this lot are available at an incredible 14/1 with Bet365 and William Hill. Australia, the team they just vanquished when not even breaking sweat, are 11/4 favourites with the same.

I guarantee you it is not a mistake. Australia, in turmoil and rated at No 3, are jollies ahead of a Pakistan team who no-one can lay a finger on. In such a frisky, fickle format it is almost impossible to earn a winning sequence like Pakistan’s. Australia and Pakistan should be transposed in the betting.

Sure, we’re suggesting you lay up your cash for a couple of years but would you seriously get the hump about taking 14/1 when they should be at the head of the betting? Come on, it’s a no brainer.

The great thing about this Pakistan team is that they are a clutch of young thrusters. They’re going to get better rather than dip in form when old stagers retire or lose their mojo.

Their bowling is, statistically, in terms of average and economy rates, the best in the world. In the first six overs no team is tighter with the ball. Likewise in the middle overs (bar Afghanistan who play minor teams).

Bowling wins you T20 tournaments and Pakistan will go very close to being champions of the world. We would bet our house that they go off at least third-favourites.
