Let’s take a more in-depth look into this weekend’s UFC Lightweight Interim title fight between current Featherweight champion ‘Max Holloway’ and Lightweight #1 contender Dustin Poirier.

I’m not sure Max Holloway avenging his UFC debut loss against Dustin Poirier was ever in his to-do list as current Featherweight Champion but here we are… UFC 236. Two of the single most entertaining fighter’s on the entire UFC roster face each other in a rematch 8 year’s down the line.

If we take a hop in the martial art’s time machine all the way back to February 2012 we will witness a very green up and comer ‘Max Holloway’ make his UFC debut against an also young and green up and comer ‘Dustin Poirier’, with the main difference being an experience. Dustin was already 3 fights deep into his UFC career with three impressive victories. So when he submitted Max all those year’s ago it wasn’t really a big surprise.

(Poirier defeats Holloway via armbar at UFC 146)

Here we are, seven years later and two totally different fighters in terms of experience and success. 20 wins and 3 losses give Max an ultra-impressive record in such a talent-filled division like the Featherweight class has always been, since his loss to Conor McGregor in 2013 Max has sailed through the division on a 13 fight win streak. Without looking in any sort of trouble throughout the entirety of all those 13 fights mentioned, Max is stepping up 10 pounds and attempting to become the second fighter to hold both Featherweight and Lightweight titles simultaneously.

Dustin Poirier much like Max went on a tear after his defeat to Conor McGregor. Holding a 24-5 record crossing between both Featherweight and Lightweight divisions, Dustin has looked much more impressive after entering the Lightweight division. He is riding a 4 fight win streak against some of the toughest competition in the division, which earnt him the Interim title shot this Saturday in Atlanta.

Original ideas for this UFC 236 title fight were being focused towards Tony Ferguson and Max, but Tony turned down the fight for whatever reason we still don’t know. In stepped Dustin who has been desperate for a chance at gold and would certainly not turn down this huge opportunity to win a title, break a huge win streak and finalise his UFC legacy.

(Holloway and Dustin face off at UFC press conference)

Swanson, Stephens, Olivera, Lamas, Pettis, Ortega and Aldo are just a handful of Max Holloways victims and if your knowledge is up to date in the martial arts world, you’ll know exactly how impressive that record is. The Hawaiian native is a home town hero and is a class act in the UFC octagon much like his opponent Dustin who is also a huge fan favourite and is guaranteed to bring the fight to anyone.

It would be unfair to even consider the first fight between the two a factor in this, as both fighters have obviously devolved some very high-level attributes they didn’t have back in 2012.

(Max Holloway vs Dustin Poirier in their first meeting way back in 2012 at UFC 143)

If Max can beat Dustin it will make him just the third fighter in UFC to hold titles in more than one weight division at the same time. He would then go on to face Khabib in a super fight that would leave UFC fans foaming from the mouth.

If Dustin can defeat Max it will solidify his legacy and certainly silence any critics, ‘The Diamond’ could break a 13 fight win streak and take home the gold for the first time in his career.

What will happen?

I expect Holloway to look and feel better than ever at Lightweight, cutting those extra pounds down at 145lbs are not an easy task yet countless times the big guy Max has made that cut and looked phenomenal. Take that cut away altogether and we have the new Interim Lightweight Champion who will have more power and cardio with a point to prove.

I do think Dustin will come out heavy, once Poirier losses the striking battle he might attempt the takedown but after the first couple rounds, I think we’ll see Max take total control. A late stoppage via TKO wouldn’t be off the cards.

The Odds

Max Holloway opened up at 1.42 – 21/50 with Bet365 and hasn’t budged all that much now sitting at 1.48 – 12/25 with Bet365.

When and Where

UFC 236 is in Atlanta. at the State Farm Arena this Saturday, 13th April.

Main card

· Max Holloway vs. Dustin Poirier for Interim Lightweight title

· Kelvin Gastelum vs. Israel Adesanya for Interim Middleweight title

· Eryk Anders vs. Khalil Rountree Jr.; Light Heavyweights

· Alan Jouban vs. Dwight Grant; Welterweights

· Ovince Saint Preux vs. Nikita Krylov; Light Heavyweights

Preliminary card

· Jalin Turner vs. Matt Frevola; Lightweights

· Wilson Reis vs. Alexandre Pantoja; Flyweights

· Max Griffin vs. Zelim Imadaev; Welterweights

· Boston Salmon vs. Khalid Taha; Bantamweights

· Curtis Millender vs. Belal Muhammad; Welterweights

· Montel Jackson vs. Andre Soukhamthath; Bantamweights

· Lauren Mueller vs. Poliana Botelho; Women's Flyweights

· Brandon Davis vs. Randy Costa; Bantamweights

What TV Channel will it be on?

If you have UFC Fight Pass, the early prelims will be shown there from 11:15 pm GMT before the main card show begins at 3 am GMT live on BT Sport 1.
