Let’s take a closer look at the main event heading into this weekend’s UFC London event

Thank you Dana White and the UFC! Thank you for giving British fans exactly what they need for a main event this weekend at the 02 arena in London. Former title contender Darren Till faces one of the most popular striking professionals in the UFC welterweight division Jorge Masvidal.

Where do I start? Incredible match making from the UFC here, whoever decided or brought this fight up into conversation back stage deserves a medal for their contribution. In a division that is full of dominant wrestlers we are going to witness the two best strikers inside the top rankings of the welterweight division go toe to toe and swing it out with a possible chance the winner gets a #1 contender fight.

Nobody wants to take a fight with Darren Till and for good reason, but ‘Game bred’ Masvidal will never turn down a fight because he is a true warrior with an ‘anyone, anywhere, anytime’ type of mind-set. After watching the face to face interview on BT Sport’s YouTube channel it is clear to see both fighters have a huge amount of respect for each other and the intensity between the two was something to make any fight fan excited.

With a 17-1-1 professional career record (6-1 UFC), Darren ‘The Gorilla’ Till has been on a professional path of destruction winning 17 fight’s consecutively besides a draw to Nicolas Dalby. He soon landed himself a title shot against Tyron Woodley who dished out Tills first loss by way of submission.

Hailing from the city of Liverpool, Till began training in Muay Thai at age 12 later turning professional at the tender age of 15. He spent majority of his young career in Brazil where he was a part of the ‘Astra Fight Team’. Prior to his UFC stint, In 2013 Darren fought eight times alone! And his record was 12-0 with seven knockouts’ before joining the UFC roster.

Personally I think Till was thrown into title contention way too early, he was out with a shoulder injury between 2015-2017 and on his return only had to win 4 straight fights to get himself a shot at the gold. If you take a closer look at his record he only has a handful of notable wins and when the UFC was giving him opponents like Jessin Ayari, they were basically handing him the win here. Yes he did beat Donald Cerrone but we know that this version of Donald is a worn down fighter at the back end of his career. His most notable and one of the closer fights came against Stephen ’Wonder boy’ Thomson which was a five round fight that wasn’t an easy one for the judges to score with some believing ‘Wonder boy’ should have had his hand raised.

Without coming across like I’m scrutinizing Darren Tills win record, he was gifted the title shot and is in the position he’s in down to his pure fighting talent. A mean southpaw stood with a Muay Thai stance, Darren is one of the best strikers in the welterweight division and aged just 25… has more than enough time to sharpen his tools and become one of the best in the world.

32-13-0 Jorge ‘Game Bred’ Masvidal is one of the UFC’s elite. Former professional boxer and kickboxer, this isn’t Masvidals first main event rodeo. He has racked up a professional MMA career of 45 fights and that’s not including his boxing and kickboxing records. Since his return to welterweight he is 4-3 with all these losses ending in a decision.

A legend and beloved by UFC enthusiasts worldwide, Jorge always puts on an entertaining fight for the fans but this weekend I feel like he may have bitten off more than he can chew. Darren is a huge welterweight who walks around at middleweight and Jorge is a former lightweight fighter who came up too welterweight. You could look at this fight as a lightweight build vs a middleweight build and trust me, that will make a huge difference come fight day.

In his most recent UFC victory, Jorge also joined the list of people who finished ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone and earnt himself a ‘performance of the night’ award.

Jorge is super skilled on the feet and has a hidden grappling game we never get to see because he’s a brawler at heart. He actually used to street fight and beat up Kimbo Slices protégé back in the day.

I love Jorge and his attitude I really do but this will be an extremely hard fight for him to win and even if he shocks us all and decides to grapple, I think Till is just going to be way too big for Masvidal to handle.

What will happen?

I expect Darren Till to start the fight cautious but with a high volume of strikes, no doubt Jorge will return and we’ll see a technical feeling out process from Jorge. Till starts off quick and doesn’t need much time to let shot’s fly, this could be Masvidals downfall but if he can maybe wait for the counter opportunities to roll in and slow the pace of the fight down, taking this fight into later rounds might actually work out in Masvidals favour but ultimately I see Darren being able to dictate this pace and overwhelm Jorge with his output. I wouldn’t be shocked if Till got the KO but I’d lean closer to a unanimous decision for Darren Till.

The Odds

Darren Till opened up at 1.45 – 9/20 with William Hill and hasn’t budged all that much now sitting at 1.40 – 2/5 with William Hill. A nice parlay/accumulator piece, but nothing more unless you are going to take Till by decision which currently isn’t showing any odd’s for props in European book makers.

When and where

UFC Fight Night 147 is in London. at the O2 Arena this Saturday, 16th March.

Full fight schedule?

Main card:

Darren Till vs Jorge Masvidal (Welterweight)

Leon Edwards vs Gunnar Nelson (Welterweight)

Volkan Oezdemir vs Dominick Reyes (Light Heavyweight)

Nathaniel Wood vs José Alberto Quiñónez (Bantamweight)

Danny Roberts vs Cláudio Silva (Welterweight)

Jack Marshman vs John Phillips (Middleweight)

Prelims:

Arnold Allen vs Jordan Rinaldi (Featherweight)

Marc Diakiese vs Joseph Duffy (Lightweight)

Nicolae Negumereanu vs Saparbek Safarov (Light Heavyweight)

Tom Breese vs Ian Heinisch (Middleweight)

Danny Henry vs Dan Ige (Featherweight)

Molly McCann vs Priscila Cachoeira (Women's Flyweight)

Mike Grundy vs Nad Narimani (Featherweight)

Can I still buy tickets?

Tickets start at £59 but black market sellers made sure of it that those seats were not available for long; you can go for the more expensive luxury seats at £539 if you fancy blowing a ton of cash.

What TV channel will it be on?

If you have UFC Fight Pass, the early prelims will be shown there from 5pm GMT before the main card show begins at 8pm GMT live on BT Sport 1.
