Another entertaining week in the world of mixed martial arts and another Main Event underdog is victorious.

Post-Fight Analysis / Recap

Anthony Pettis vs Stephen Thompson

Coming in as the biggest betting favourite this weekend, Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson left the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville with the first knockout defeat in his entire career.

4.00 – 3/1 underdog with William Hill, Anthony ‘ShowTime’ Pettis gave punters who backed him something to smile about in devastating fashion. Towards the end of the second round, Anthony took a body kick in style by returning fire with a superman hook punch to end the fight. This was a shock to some; many believed this was a “walk in the park” for Thompson, leaving no love at all for ‘Showtime’ let alone the thought that he could potentially knock Thompson out.

With the unknowns, I skipped this fight altogether. Anthony’s price jumped out at me whilst I was writing ‘Dogs and Their Odds’ UFC 148 but that’s as close as I got to betting anything on this fight. With Pettis jumping up a weight class and holding so much confidence, I certainly wasn’t going to back Thompson at 1.25 – ¼ with William Hill.

From the outset, the fight did seem to swing in Thompson's favour but I think the audience was swayed by Thompson's slick movement and forward pressure, as the statistics show Pettis landed a 58% significant strike rate over Thompson's 43%. Leg kicks were certainly building up in Anthony's tally as he landed 20 of 22 attempted kicks.

Although Pettis was fighting a good fight, I still believe Thompson was winning and would have won the five-round battle if Pettis didn’t finish inside the distance. Pettis backers certainly should have rethought their betting strategy and maybe taken a stab at the unthinkable 10.55 – 86/9 odds for Pettis by knockout considering the 25 minutes most likely never would have gone his way.

I stand by what I say that mixed martial arts are one of the single most difficult sports to handicap; you can’t make a comeback or hedge a bet when your selection is unconscious on the mat. At the same time, Pettis is proof that given the right spot you can also make some lucrative return on UFC and MMA betting.

What will we see next for the seemingly newly improved, healthier welterweight version of Anthony Pettis? This is totally up in the air at the moment, with so much going on in a division where anybody inside the top 10 could be matched up against Pettis; it’s anybody’s guess who’s up next.

Anthony ‘Showtime’ Pettis defeats Stephen Thompson via KO (Round Two)

Randa Markos submits Angela Hill at UFC Fight Night 148, Nashville

Randa Markos vs Angela Hill

What could possibly make a better woman’s strawweight fight than former TUF housemates and veteran rivals Randa Markos and Angela Hill?

Four minutes into the first round Randa showed her ground game isn’t to be ignored nearly snapping Angela’s arm before the referee stepped in.
