Wells Fargo Championship

May 2nd-5th

Quail Hollow Golf Course

Charlotte, North Carolina

Par 71, 7600 yards

[/]{"component": "embedHTML", "code": "

Excuse me while I drool 🤤@PGATOUR players have played these three holes at @QuailGolf (16, 17 & 18) a total of 6,305 OVER par since 2003. Should be a fun week in #Charlotte!⛳️🏌🏽‍♂️@WellsFargoGolf @FOX46News pic.twitter.com/rQ4ILrVO3D
— Morgan Frances (@MorganFOX46) April 29, 2019
\n\n"}[/]

The Quail Hollow Golf Course has hosted the Wells Fargo Championship for seven of the last eight years. The course played host to the 2017 PGA Championship and that years event was moved to Wilmington at Eagle Point Golf Course. The tournament has a sixteen year history, previously named the Quail Hollow Championship and the Wachovia Championship. The course was home to the Kemper Open between 1969 and 1979 on the PGA tour and is a well established venue.

Throughout the years the Quail Hollow course has been tinkered and changed gradually by Tom Fazio making the course more of a championship test than a Country Club. Six hundred feet above sea level, easy on the eye it cuts a pleasant walk for professionals and spectators alike. The challenging last three holes are aptly named “The Green Mile” and are one of the toughest finishes to a round on the PGA Tour.

Contenders

Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy is twice a champion here and that is no surprise given we have discussed already how the venue has morphed into a championship test in recent years. Already a winner at this year's “fifth major” the Players Championship this is a perfect warm up for the PGA Championship in two weeks time.

[/]{"component": "embedHTML", "code": "

Fun times earlier this week with the best junior golfers in the world and my friends @Nike!

Thanks for joining me @chambleebrandel and big congrats to @tommckibbin8 on the win today! 🏆 pic.twitter.com/811kSOaldW
— Rory McIlroy (@McIlroyRory) April 27, 2019
\n\n"}[/]

Possibly the best player not to win a major championship Rickie Fowler has some strong course form in the bank and the 2012 champion is often an each-way factor here.

Justin Thomas the player who win the PGA Championship when it was held at Quail Hollow has looked far from his best since blowing a lead in the Genesis Open early in the season. The winner of that event JB Holmes was the 2014 champion here giving another correlation with championship course winners.

Last year’s champion Australian Jason Day is a PGA Champion and Players Champion so he continues the theme of the championship course producing winners of the highest calibre.

2009 US Open champion Lucas Glover the 2011 champion here continues that trend and his game appears to have a new level of consistency this season. Webb Simpson likewise a major champion and Players champion's plays well here and was prominent at the Masters. Phil Mickelson has a phenomenal six top 5 finishes in the last ten years, in fact thirteen top 20 finishes in fifteen years without ever winning.

When we look for winner here we must favour top of the market contenders however, there have been two exceptions with James Hahn (2016) and Derek Ernst (2013) both winning at 500/1 (501.00).

After a slow start to the season last season's AT&T Byron Nelson Classic winner Aaron Wise appears to be trending in the right direction with an impressive top 20 finish at the Masters. A runner up here last season he looks likely to play well this week.

At last week’s Zurich Classic Robert Castro played well in partnership with Cameron Tringale and looks to be hitting form at correct time for this weeks event. Twice a top 10 finisher at Quail Hollow he must now be considered.

My research has thrown up several interesting “journeyman professionals” with pieces of form here and at similar ball striking venues. Firstly we have a rejuvenated Michael Thompson who has found a new level of consistency this year after a stop start career that has promised much. Luke List is a superbly consistent player at similar types of venue with two top 20 finishes here. PGA tour veteran Jonathan Byrd has four top 14 finishes in the last nine years and showed earlier in the season with a 4th place finish in the Corales Puntacana that he retains the ability to perform with the big boys. Finally Kyle Stanley produced his best display of the current season at the Masters and at his best is a ball striker of the highest calibre and worth a small each way punt.

[/]{"component": "embedHTML", "code": ""}[/]

Recommended Bets

Rory Mclroy – win @ 13/2 (7.50) Bet365

Kyle Stanley – each way @ 140/1 (141.00) Bet365

Aaron Wise - each way @ 75/1 (76.00) Bet365

Roberto Castro – Top 20 @ 6/1 (7.00) Unibet

Phil Mickelson - top20 @ 6/4 (2.50) Unibet
