Can the talented Fiona Ferro give Martic a run for her money?

Petra Martic vs Fiona Ferro

Wednesday, September 11, Zhengzhou

Somewhat of a contrast of styles in this match up and while I would expect Martic to come through in the end Fiona is a fiery underdog and should be able to give the Croat a run for her money. At 4.2 the 2-1 appeals though you could also go for 3 sets at 2.88+.

Martic is a solid top 30 player and tall at 5’ 11” with a highly effective serve. While her baseline game is solid her biggest edge over the lower ranked opposition is consistency on serve and I would expect that to be the difference again in this match up. Given this tendency it is unsurprising that she is a player who rarely loses but is often well tested as many top 100 players are able to match or beat her from the baseline and, if they can serve well for a set, often keep it tight. She has played 30 matches as favourite over the last 12 months and this bet has lost in just 16 or 53%. She is 1.36 for this match and priced 1.2 to 1.5 this bet has lost in 8 of her 17 matches over the past 12 months. In other words, it’s been a very profitable bet for Martic recently.

Ferro is a more balanced player and given her excellent form in 2019 I would not be surprised if she was able to push Martic. She has a 32-11 record in 2019 for a 16.7% ROI and she won her maiden main level title in Lausanne, defeating Cornet priced 2.6 in the final. Priced as the underdog she is 16-18 in 2019 for a 16.2% ROI and she has won 7 of her last 10 matches going back to June. Generally, she prefers clay (as does Martic) so it is helpful that this is a slow hard court and she looked comfortable with conditions in her opening round winning 6-2 6-3.

She isn’t ideal for this specific bet since she is such an effective underdog, but she struggles to beat the top players with a 1-6 record against the top 30. Regardless I feel she will be hold her own from the baseline and take advantage of any lul that Martic has which is all we can really ask. At anything over 4 the 2-1 seems like a very sensible bet.

Best Bet: Petra Martic 2-1 at 4.2 with Ladbrokes

Karolina Pliskova vs Polona Hercog

Wednesday, September 11, Zhengzhou

Similar situation to the above match with a consistent, somewhat serve orientated favourite and an underdog who is likely to put up a fight but come up short in the end. Again, I have opted for the 2-1 this time at 4.4.

Pliskova is world number 3 and on best form she may well dominate but she has a history of struggling to beat weaker opponents comfortably. Somewhat like Martic it is often Pliskova’s serve that gets her over the line as the lower ranked opposition are able to compete with her from the baseline. At 6’ 1” this is unsurprising, but it does often lead to a lot of 2-1 matches. Priced as favourite she has played 52 matches in 2019 and in 15 the 2-1 has landed so 29% suggesting odds of 3.4. She is 1.25 in this match and priced sub 1.5 the 2-1 has landed in 14 of 37 matches or 38% suggesting odds of 2.62.

Hercog is another one who prefers the clay but again she was a comfortable 6-3 6-4 winner in her first match and perhaps she can catch Pliskova cold in her opener before she attunes to conditions. She has a 2-25 record against the top 10 but the 2-1 has lost in just 5 of her last 10 matches going back to 2015 and in 16 of 25 overall. The H2H is also supportive as 3 of their 5 meetings went the distance and Pliskova won 2 of them.

Again, I’d say anything over 4 is value though do take the 4.4 if you can as that makes a huge difference.

Best Bet: Karolina Pliskova 2-1 at 4.4 with Ladbrokes
